Given the fact that the Devil rays are highly unlikely to make a big-money free agent signing, I thought it might be interesting to look at someone they might actually be willing to pay. On that front, I believe Omar Vizquel would be a good fit at this point in the Rays development. He fits the bill when it comes to the Rays stated goal of improving the defense, and he certainly provides a veteran presence on an otherwise young team. I know he doesn't do a ton with the bat, but even at 40 he still runs well and we won't necessarily need a power hitter at SS if we bring up Longoria to play 3rd. And he still plays great defense, which could really help the young pitching staff. He made about $5 million last season, but may very well be willing to take less than that if the Giants decide to go in a different direction. Best of all, you don't have to offer a long-term contract because of his age. A two-year deal would give the Rays enough time to decide whether or not Brignac is going to develop into a good major league shortstop, and having an 11-time gold glove winner around to teach Brignac some of the finer points of fielding cannot hurt.
It would be interesting to know what his contract interests are?
